The Moon sign identifies the zodiac sign occupied by the Moon at the moment of birth. In natal astrology it is associated with instinctive responses, emotional needs, memories and familiar habits. It complements rather than replaces the Sun sign, rising sign and other chart factors.

How the twelve Moon signs differ

Fire-sign Moons are often interpreted through spontaneous expression and movement, earth-sign Moons through continuity and concrete reassurance, air-sign Moons through exchange and perspective, and water-sign Moons through emotional connection. The sign’s modality adds another layer: cardinal Moons initiate, fixed Moons persist and mutable Moons adjust. These are traditional categories, not clinical descriptions.

Moon signs in context

House placement identifies the life area where lunar themes may be prominent; aspects to Saturn, Venus, Mercury or other planets modify emotional expression. A Moon in Scorpio in the fourth house is not the same chart configuration as one in the eleventh. The Moon’s exact degree and lunar phase also contribute additional context.

Calculating a Moon sign

The Moon changes zodiac signs approximately every two to three days. A correct date, time and location may be needed to resolve a sign near its boundary. Do not assume that the Sun sign or calendar day alone determines the Moon sign.
