Dasha systems are time-period frameworks used in Jyotisha to organize predictive interpretation. The commonly taught Vimshottari dasha assigns a sequence of planetary periods totaling 120 years as a theoretical cycle. Other dasha systems use different calculations and assumptions.

Vimshottari mahadashas

Vimshottari periods follow a nine-graha sequence with fixed traditional lengths: Ketu 7 years, Venus 20, Sun 6, Moon 10, Mars 7, Rahu 18, Jupiter 16, Saturn 19 and Mercury 17. The starting balance depends on the natal Moon’s position within its nakshatra. Each major period can be subdivided into subperiods, called antardashas.

What dasha interpretation requires

An individual dasha is not universally good or bad. A reader examines the planet’s sign and house, rulerships, associations, condition and the matters it signifies in the natal chart. The timing method indicates symbolic periods; current transits and other techniques may be consulted separately.

Other dasha approaches

Yogini, Chara and other dashas exist in different Jyotisha lineages and use distinct rules. A chart report should identify the chosen dasha system and ayanamsha, especially when comparing periods from different calculators.
