Centaurs are small Solar System bodies whose orbits often occupy the region among or beyond the giant planets. Modern astrologers have developed interpretive systems for several centaurs, especially Chiron, Pholus and Nessus. These associations are comparatively recent and should be distinguished from the longer-established traditional planetary framework.

Chiron and the centaur tradition

Chiron was discovered in 1977 and became associated with the mythic healer and teacher of Greek tradition. In modern astrology it is frequently interpreted through vulnerability, learning, mentorship and the transformation of difficult experience into skill or empathy. These are symbolic readings, not medical explanations or diagnoses. House, sign and aspect context modify how Chiron is discussed.

Pholus, Nessus and other centaurs

Pholus is sometimes associated with catalytic developments or consequences that expand beyond an initially small event. Nessus is interpreted in some contemporary schools through inherited patterns, responsibility and boundaries, though interpretations vary widely. Because these meanings are not standardized, writers should make their chosen tradition clear and avoid sensational claims from a single placement.

How to use centaurs in chart interpretation

Begin with the Ascendant, luminaries, major planets and houses. Then identify particularly close centaur contacts to important chart factors. The sign offers a style, the house a topic and the aspect an interaction, but only a coherent repeated pattern justifies strong emphasis. See the Natal Astrology hub for related objects and calculated points.
