A birth chart, or natal chart, is a symbolic map of the sky calculated for a person’s date, time and place of birth. It places planets in zodiac signs and astrological houses and records the aspects between them. Natal astrology is the interpretive study of that chart. Reading it responsibly means combining several layers rather than turning one placement into a complete description of a person.
What a natal chart contains
The Sun and Moon describe two especially prominent symbolic functions; the Ascendant marks the eastern horizon and helps orient the houses. Planets describe functions such as perception, affection, initiative, growth and discipline. Zodiac signs qualify their style, houses identify the fields of life where they are expressed, and aspects show relationships among them. Accurate birth time matters for the Ascendant, Midheaven and house cusps; an approximate time can change the interpretation.
Reading the chart in a practical order
Start with the chart angles and luminaries, then inspect the chart ruler and the placement of personal planets. Notice concentrations of planets, angular placements, elemental emphasis and repeated aspect patterns. Only then add secondary factors such as lunar nodes, asteroids, centaurs, Arabic Parts and other calculated points. A technique is most useful when it clarifies the chart rather than multiplying isolated meanings. Compare apparently conflicting indications before drawing conclusions.
Beyond the planets: specialized chart factors
A natal chart can include mathematical points and objects beyond the ten commonly used astrological planets. The North and South Nodes relate to the orbital intersection of the Moon with the ecliptic; the Part of Fortune is a calculated Arabic Part; Chiron is a small Solar System body used in modern interpretation. Astrocartography relocates planetary angles across the globe. These methods differ in historical origin and should not be treated as identical.
