The twelve zodiac signs divide the tropical zodiac into twelve equal sections of 30 degrees. They provide a language for describing how planetary functions are expressed in an astrological chart. A Sun sign is the most familiar example, but the Moon, Ascendant and every planet also occupy a zodiac sign. Learning the signs means understanding elements, modalities, rulerships and the differences between a sign and a house.

The twelve signs at a glance

Aries is cardinal fire, associated with initiative; Taurus is fixed earth, associated with steadiness; Gemini is mutable air, associated with exchange; Cancer is cardinal water, associated with protection; Leo is fixed fire, associated with expressive purpose; and Virgo is mutable earth, associated with analysis and refinement.

Libra is cardinal air, associated with balance and relationship; Scorpio is fixed water, associated with depth and continuity; Sagittarius is mutable fire, associated with exploration; Capricorn is cardinal earth, associated with responsibility; Aquarius is fixed air, associated with independence and shared systems; and Pisces is mutable water, associated with imagination and responsiveness.

Elements and modalities explain the structure

Fire, earth, air and water describe four traditional temperamental styles, while cardinal, fixed and mutable indicate modes of action. Every sign combines one element and one modality, producing twelve unique pairings. Signs also have planetary rulers: for example, Mars traditionally rules Aries, Venus rules Taurus and Libra, and Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo. Modern and traditional rulership systems can differ for Scorpio, Aquarius and Pisces.

Dates, birthdays and zodiac cusps

Popular zodiac date ranges describe the Sun’s approximate seasonal passage through the signs. The precise moment of entry can vary by year and time zone, especially for birthdays near a boundary. A standard birth chart places the Sun in one sign at a particular instant; popular ‘cusp’ labels do not mean that the Sun occupies two signs simultaneously. A birth chart calculation is the appropriate way to settle an uncertain boundary.

How zodiac signs work in a birth chart

Read a planet’s meaning first, its sign next, and its house and aspects for context. A person with Sun in Leo may have Moon in Capricorn and Venus in Virgo; these placements cannot be reduced to one general Leo personality description. Sign-based interpretations are symbolic traditions, not scientific measurements of character. Explore the subtopics below for dates, elements, modalities and sign boundaries.

Begin with the element and modality of a sign, then use birthday ranges carefully and verify the actual Sun position when someone is born near a boundary. These guides separate chart calculations from popular cusp descriptions.

Explore the 12 Zodiac Signs: personality, dates and meaning

Each sign guide answers the most common questions about Sun-sign dates, strengths, weaknesses, love, friendships, career, ruling planets, mythology, Moon and rising placements. They follow the same interpretive structure so readers can compare signs without assuming all members of an element behave alike. Fire, earth, air and water describe one layer of astrology; modality and planet rulership provide the next.

Fire zodiac signs

Fire signs combine enthusiasm, visible initiative and creative expression, but Aries, Leo and Sagittarius differ in modality.

Earth zodiac signs

Earth signs explore material life, dependability and practical choices, but Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn do not work in identical ways.

Air zodiac signs

Air signs share an interest in language, thought and social exchange, with different approaches to decision-making and collective life.

Water zodiac signs

Water signs interpret the world through emotion, attachment and intuitively perceived context, with important differences in how they respond.

How to use these sign guides

Begin with your Sun sign, then read your Moon and Ascendant signs if you know your birth data. The Sun sign is not the same thing as a complete personality profile. For a complete reading, compare the sign’s element and modality, the relevant planet’s house and its natal aspects; then explore Birth Charts & Natal Astrology or use the Birth Chart Calculator. The Zodiac Elements & Modalities hub compares the four elemental families.
