Astrological aspects describe the angular relationships between planets and other chart points. They turn isolated placements into a connected pattern: a strong Mercury placement may suggest how someone thinks, while Mercury square Saturn adds a specific tension between expression and restraint. Aspects are measured in degrees along the zodiac, not by the physical distance between planets.

How planetary aspects work

A natal chart is a circle of 360 degrees. When two positions are separated by an angle close to a recognized aspect, astrologers interpret a relationship between their symbolic functions. A conjunction brings forces together; an opposition creates a polarity; a square highlights friction and effort; a trine indicates relatively easy expression; and a sextile presents a more cooperative opportunity. The closeness of the angle, called the orb, affects how prominently an aspect is weighed. Orbs vary between schools, and luminaries often receive wider allowances.

Major, minor, and patterned configurations

The five major aspects establish a useful foundation, but they do not exhaust chart geometry. Quincunxes, semisquares, sesquiquadrates and other minor aspects can add nuance when they are exact or recur in an otherwise coherent pattern. T-squares, grand trines, yods and grand crosses describe networks of aspects involving three or more positions. An aspect pattern must be assessed as a whole: one easy trine does not negate a difficult square elsewhere in the figure.

How to interpret aspects in a chart

Identify the planets first, then their signs, houses, angular separation and exact orb. Ask which life functions are in conversation, where they manifest and whether they support, contradict or modify one another. Distinguish a natal aspect from an aspect made by a moving planet to a natal position. The former describes a stable chart feature; the latter describes a temporary timing condition. Aspects suggest themes for interpretation, not predetermined events.

Move from the five major angular relationships to more specialized minor aspects, then apply the geometry to stable natal planetary contacts. Aspect patterns bring multiple contacts into a single reading rather than treating each one as isolated.
