Arabic Parts, also called Lots, are calculated zodiacal points obtained by combining the longitudes of chart factors through addition and subtraction. The Part of Fortune and the Part of Spirit are among the best-known examples. They belong to a long tradition of Hellenistic and medieval astrological practice, and they are not physical bodies in the sky.

How the Part of Fortune is calculated

One widely used daytime formula for the Part of Fortune is Ascendant + Moon โˆ’ Sun, with a reversed luminary order often used for night charts in traditional sect-sensitive practice. The result is reduced to a position within the 360-degree zodiac. Formula conventions vary among sources and schools, so a precise calculation should name the rule and chart sect applied.

Fortune, Spirit and other Lots

Fortune is commonly connected with embodied circumstances and material experience, while Spirit is frequently interpreted through intention and purposeful action. Other Lots relate to marriage, children, necessity, eros and many additional topics. The large number of named Lots does not justify treating every result as equally central to an interpretation.

Reading a Lot in the natal chart

Examine the Lot’s sign, house, ruler and closely associated planets according to the chosen historical method. Avoid interpreting a Lot as an independent planet or ignoring its relationship to the Ascendant and luminaries. Continue with Chart Points for the distinction between calculated positions and physical objects.
