The lunar nodes are the two points where the Moon’s orbital plane intersects the ecliptic, the apparent path of the Sun. They are always opposite one another: the North Node, also called the ascending node, and the South Node, the descending node. Unlike planets, the nodes are mathematical positions. They are especially relevant to eclipse geometry and have acquired additional symbolic meanings in several astrological traditions.

North Node and South Node meanings

Modern Western astrology often describes the North Node in terms of development and unfamiliar direction, and the South Node in terms of inherited or familiar patterns. Traditional interpretations differ and may place greater emphasis on eclipses, planetary condition and timing. A node’s sign indicates symbolic style and its house indicates life context; neither should be treated as proof of a person’s karmic history.

Mean and true nodes

Chart software may offer mean nodes, which average the nodal motion, or true nodes, which account for short-term oscillation. The small difference can matter close to a sign boundary. Always identify the option used when comparing charts or dates.

How to interpret the nodal axis

Read both ends of the axis together. Their signs and houses are linked, and contacts to the Sun, Moon, angles or other planets may be significant within the practitioner’s chosen method. The Moon’s nodes form an important bridge between natal interpretation, eclipses and some traditional Indian timing techniques. For more background, read Chart Points and Eclipses.
