A transit aspect occurs when a moving planet forms a recognized angular relationship to a position in the birth chart. Squares, oppositions, trines, sextiles and conjunctions are read differently, and their meaning depends on the planets involved rather than the angle alone.

Conjunctions, squares and oppositions

A transit conjunction can sharpen awareness of a natal planet’s themes. Squares tend to mark pressure or adjustment; oppositions can highlight competing priorities and relationships with other people. Such symbols do not prove an event: the house topics, current life circumstances and the natal chart must all be considered.

Trines, sextiles and orbs

Trines are commonly interpreted as relatively smooth developments, while sextiles suggest cooperative opportunities that may need active use. Interpretive strength depends on orb and timing: a fast-moving exact Moon transit differs from a long series of Saturn contacts. Avoid using a single uniform orb for every planet without specifying the method.

Natal versus transit aspects

Natal aspects are fixed relationships between birth positions. Transit aspects change with the sky and may recur during retrograde cycles. A chart report should label which type is being described and whether a contact involves the natal or the transiting body.

Planet Transit Aspects: Guides by Transiting Planet

The first planet in each guide is the body moving through today’s sky; the second is a fixed natal planet or point. This direction matters: transiting Sun square natal Moon is a different contact from transiting Moon square natal Sun. Start with the five major angular relationships, then explore minor and harmonic divisions when exact and relevant to the chart.

Quick contacts from the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus and Mars tend to be read on shorter timescales, while Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto can describe much longer phases, especially with retrograde repetition.
