Sun transit aspects describe the angles formed by moving Sun to the positions of planets and points in a birth chart. Astrologers use them to explore identity, purpose, visibility and deliberate choice. Conjunctions, sextiles, squares, trines and oppositions provide the main interpretive framework; minor and harmonic aspects add progressively finer detail. The essential distinction is directional: transiting Sun square natal Moon is not the same transit as transiting Moon square natal Sun.

This guide explains each class of aspect and offers interpretive starting points, not only an index. The goal is to recognize bring an important question into conscious focus without falling into the common trap of overidentify with a role or insist on being right. Interpretations are part of an astrological symbolic tradition; they are not scientifically validated predictors of personal events.

What Does a Sun Transit Aspect Mean?

A transit aspect occurs when the current zodiac longitude of Sun forms a specified angle with a natal planet, the Ascendant, the Midheaven or another chosen chart point. The birth-chart position remains fixed while Sun changes position in the sky. An aspect can be applying as the moving planet approaches exactness, exact when the separation matches the angle, or separating once the contact widens.

Sun is often studied through identity, purpose, visibility and deliberate choice. In this context, an aspect may be approached as a prompt to name one clear priority and check whether your actions match it. Its interpretation also depends on which natal planet receives the contact, where that planet falls by house, and the aspects already present in the natal chart. The transit angle alone cannot determine whether an outcome will be easy or difficult.

To understand why the same planetary angle can express itself differently from one chart to another, compare the main Sun Transits guide with Sun in Astrology and Astrology Houses. For example, a Sun transit in the first house highlights identity and self-presentation, as explored in Sun Transit in the 1st House, while a tenth-house passage places the same symbolic contact in a career and reputation context, as described in Sun Transit in the 10th House.

Major Sun Transit Aspects

The five major angles are the primary layer to study before adding more specialized divisions. The conjunction concentrates themes; the sextile usually suggests cooperation; the square calls attention to conflict or adjustment; the trine suggests relative ease; and the opposition highlights polarity. None has a fixed outcome independent of the planets involved. See Major Aspects for their geometry and Transit Aspects for their use in predictive astrology.

Sun Conjunction Transit (0°)

A conjunction places moving Sun at approximately 0° from a natal position. Astrologically, it may draw concentrated attention to the natal planet, as an annual Sun-to-Sun conjunction does for themes of identity and a birthday-year reset. The productive question is how to name one clear priority and check whether your actions match it, not which event must happen.

Sun Sextile Transit (60°)

A sextile places moving Sun at approximately 60° from a natal position. Astrologically, it may create a modest opening for expressing the natal planet’s qualities without requiring confrontation. The productive question is how to name one clear priority and check whether your actions match it, not which event must happen.

Sun Square Transit (90°)

A square places moving Sun at approximately 90° from a natal position. Astrologically, it may highlight a conflict between intentions and the natal planet’s needs, particularly when duties demand conscious adjustment. The productive question is how to name one clear priority and check whether your actions match it, not which event must happen.

Sun Trine Transit (120°)

A trine places moving Sun at approximately 120° from a natal position. Astrologically, it may support easier alignment between values and action, provided that the favorable opening is used. The productive question is how to name one clear priority and check whether your actions match it, not which event must happen.

Sun Opposition Transit (180°)

A opposition places moving Sun at approximately 180° from a natal position. Astrologically, it may bring a counterpoint into awareness: what you want versus what another priority, person or habit asks of you. The productive question is how to name one clear priority and check whether your actions match it, not which event must happen.

Minor Sun Transit Aspects

Minor aspects can refine interpretation when the angle is close and the natal chart supports a related theme. They should normally be given tighter orbs than major aspects. A minor aspect does not automatically outweigh a close conjunction or square, and separate articles about a minor contact need not imply that it deserves equal predictive weight. For the geometric definitions see Minor Aspects.

Sun Semi-sextile Transit (30°)

The semi-sextile describes a separation of 30° between transiting Sun and a natal body. As a cautious symbolic reading, it can invite you to notice a small change in priorities without treating it as a dramatic turning point. In practice, examine the actual degree, the natal planet and whether the issue repeats a stronger theme.

Sun Semi-square Transit (45°)

The semi-square describes a separation of 45° between transiting Sun and a natal body. As a cautious symbolic reading, it can invite you to recognize irritation that may reveal a workable adjustment rather than a major obstacle. In practice, examine the actual degree, the natal planet and whether the issue repeats a stronger theme.

Sun Quintile Transit (72°)

The quintile describes a separation of 72° between transiting Sun and a natal body. As a cautious symbolic reading, it can invite you to try a creative approach to the public expression of a personal strength. In practice, examine the actual degree, the natal planet and whether the issue repeats a stronger theme.

Sun Sesquiquadrate Transit (135°)

The sesquiquadrate describes a separation of 135° between transiting Sun and a natal body. As a cautious symbolic reading, it can invite you to revisit a point of friction between immediate intention and a longer-term commitment. In practice, examine the actual degree, the natal planet and whether the issue repeats a stronger theme.

Sun Biquintile Transit (144°)

The biquintile describes a separation of 144° between transiting Sun and a natal body. As a cautious symbolic reading, it can invite you to reshape an established skill or presentation into a more deliberate form. In practice, examine the actual degree, the natal planet and whether the issue repeats a stronger theme.

Sun Quincunx (inconjunct) Transit (150°)

The quincunx (inconjunct) describes a separation of 150° between transiting Sun and a natal body. As a cautious symbolic reading, it can invite you to reconcile aims that seem to require different kinds of attention instead of selecting one blindly. In practice, examine the actual degree, the natal planet and whether the issue repeats a stronger theme.

Harmonic Sun Transit Aspects

Harmonic astrology divides the 360° zodiac circle into a larger number of equal parts. The resulting contacts include septiles, noviles, deciles and more unusual families. They belong to specialized interpretive methods, not a universal set of agreed meanings; an author should state the harmonic, exact angle and orb. For Sun, which symbolizes identity, purpose, visibility and deliberate choice, the practical aim remains bring an important question into conscious focus. These families are grouped under this single section rather than treated as dozens of unrelated major topics.

Seventh harmonic: septile family

The septile (51.43°), biseptile (102.86°) and triseptile (154.29°) are associated in some specialized schools with turning points in conviction or patterns that resist ordinary analysis. Their exact contact should be calculated before drawing any symbolic conclusion.

Ninth harmonic: novile family

Novile (40°), binovile (80°) and quadnovile (160°) divide the circle into nine parts. They are sometimes linked to maturation of insight or sustained contemplative work, but interpretation varies widely by school.

Tenth harmonic: decile family

Decile (36°) and tridecile (108°) are tenth-harmonic contacts often discussed alongside deliberate skill and shaping ability. Quintile and biquintile also fit the larger tenth-harmonic grid, but are treated above as familiar minor aspects to avoid double counting.

Eleventh harmonic: undecile family

Undecile (32.73°), biundecile (65.45°), triundecile (98.18°), quadriundecile (130.91°) and quinundecile (163.64°) belong to an uncommon symbolic framework. Do not attribute established predictive significance to these angles.

Fifteenth harmonic

Angles of 24°, 48°, 96° and 168° are among the distinct fifteenth-harmonic contacts. Some authors call 24° a quindecile; this should not be confused with the separate 165° usage.

Sixteenth harmonic

Semi-octile (22.5°), sesquioctile (67.5°), 112.5° and 157.5° extend the eighth-harmonic tension sequence into finer divisions. They are most useful when an exact contact repeats an already clear chart theme.

Twentieth harmonic

Vigintile (18°), 54°, 126° and 162° describe very fine divisions of the zodiac. These are specialist details rather than a reason to assume that every minute variation has equal weight.

Twenty-fourth harmonic

The 15°, 75°, 105° and 165° contacts are among the distinct twenty-fourth-harmonic angles; the 45° and 135° divisions are normally covered as familiar minor aspects. The 165° quindecile is associated with a separate modern naming convention.

Quindecile terminology: 24° versus 165°

These angles refer to different geometric separations even though the same name sometimes appears in published interpretations. Keep the exact number in the chart and in any future article title to avoid ambiguity.

How to Time Sun Transit Aspects

In zodiacal motion, Sun roughly one zodiac degree per day; its exact aspects normally concern a short period of days. Exactness depends on the chosen orb: a narrow orb identifies a shorter time around the peak, whereas a wide orb produces a longer interpretive window. The applying phase precedes exactness and the separating phase follows it; neither phase creates certainty about external events.

The geocentric Sun does not appear retrograde, so it cannot repeat an exact solar transit through a retrograde loop. A solar transit can be useful for a short reflection on the day’s emphasis, not a forecast of a life-changing event. For precise dates, consult an ephemeris, use a consistent tropical or sidereal reference system and compare geocentric longitudes with natal degrees. A person needs an accurate birth time to evaluate natal houses and the Ascendant, but the planetary natal longitudes can often be computed from a reliable birth date and time.

The Birth Charts & Natal Astrology overview explains the natal chart context in which the same transit may be read differently. Treat meaningful decisions about money, health or relationships according to their actual evidence rather than astrological timing.

Sun Transit Aspects to Natal Planets: Interpretive Examples

These examples show why the specific pair matters. The first planet is transiting Sun; the second planet remains in the natal chart. They are illustrations of interpretive technique, not links to individual aspect articles that have not yet been published.

Transiting Sun conjunction natal Moon

This aspect is a moving-Sun contact with the natal Moon, not the same as transiting Moon forming that angle to natal Sun. In this reading, the meeting of conscious purpose with natal emotional needs; notice where these cooperate rather than assuming perfect harmony. Consider the natal house, planetary condition and real context before making a decision.

Transiting Sun square natal Saturn

This aspect is a moving-Sun contact with the natal Saturn, not the same as transiting Saturn forming that angle to natal Sun. In this reading, a temporary clash between ambition and duty; revise an unrealistic deadline instead of treating resistance as failure. Consider the natal house, planetary condition and real context before making a decision.

Transiting Sun trine natal Jupiter

This aspect is a moving-Sun contact with the natal Jupiter, not the same as transiting Jupiter forming that angle to natal Sun. In this reading, perspective, confidence and a chance to direct enthusiasm toward an achievable goal. Consider the natal house, planetary condition and real context before making a decision.

Transiting Sun opposition natal Pluto

This aspect is a moving-Sun contact with the natal Pluto, not the same as transiting Pluto forming that angle to natal Sun. In this reading, questions about agency and control; avoid forcing a decision simply to prove authority. Consider the natal house, planetary condition and real context before making a decision.

Transit Aspects vs Natal Aspects and Synastry

A natal aspect describes two positions in the same birth chart; a transit aspect connects the moving sky to that fixed chart; and a synastry aspect compares placements belonging to two different people. These are separate questions with different timeframes and user intentions. Compare Natal Planetary Aspects and Synastry & Interchart Aspects to avoid confusing the techniques.

Direction also matters in transits: transiting Sun square natal Moon has a different moving planet and timeline from transiting Moon square natal Sun. The complementary planetary interpretation belongs with Moon Transit Aspects, while the present guide consistently treats Sun as the body in motion.

How to Read a Sun Transit in Your Chart

  1. Identify the natal planet or angle receiving the contact and its exact zodiac longitude.
  2. Find transiting Sun’s current degree and measure the angular separation.
  3. Start with conjunction, sextile, square, trine or opposition, then use minor or harmonic aspects selectively.
  4. Check the applying or separating phase, exactness, orb and possible station-related repetitions.
  5. Place the contact in the relevant natal houses, sign placements and broader chart context.
  6. Translate the interpretation into a bounded reflection: name one clear priority and check whether your actions match it.
