Astrological Cycles & Predictions

Predictive astrology studies change through time by comparing current or mathematically advanced positions with a natal chart. Planetary transits are the most familiar method, but returns, progressions, directions and eclipses provide different timing frameworks. These techniques describe symbolic periods and themes; they do not establish that a specific event must occur.

Transits and the moving sky

A transit is the position of a planet at a chosen date and time, usually interpreted relative to natal planets, angles or houses. Fast-moving bodies describe brief conditions, while Jupiter, Saturn and the outer planets can form longer background cycles. An applying aspect is moving toward exactness; a separating aspect has passed its exact point. Retrograde motion may produce repeated passes over the same natal degree, which is why a transit can have several peaks.

Retrogrades, returns and eclipses

Retrograde is the apparent reversal of planetary motion as seen from Earth; planets do not literally change orbital direction. A planetary return occurs when a moving planet comes back to its natal zodiacal longitude. Solar returns focus on the Sun’s annual return, lunar returns on the Moon’s monthly return, and Saturn returns on a much longer cycle. Solar and lunar eclipses occur when the Sun, Earth and Moon align near the lunar nodes; astrologers often interpret the signs, houses and contacts involved.

Comparing predictive techniques

Secondary progressions use a symbolic day-for-a-year correspondence, while directions advance chart factors by a chosen arc or timing rule. These should not be conflated with astronomical transits. When interpreting a period, begin with the larger recurring cycles, inspect relevant natal promises and then examine shorter triggers. Avoid treating a retrograde, eclipse or single exact aspect as a universal prediction affecting every person identically.
