Tarot and Astrology: Zodiac and Planetary Correspondences

Explore tarot astrology correspondences: 12 zodiac trumps, seven classical planets, four suit elements and the 36 Minor Arcana decans.

Tarot and Astrology explains traditional zodiac, planetary, elemental and decan correspondences of the Major and Minor Arcana, distinguishing later Hermetic systems from the historical origins of tarot.

How Are Tarot and Astrology Connected?

Tarot and astrology are separate historical traditions that became connected through later occult systems, especially nineteenth-century Hermetic organizations and the Golden Dawn. In that framework, the twenty-two Major Arcana trumps receive zodiacal, planetary or elemental attributions, while thirty-six numbered Minor Arcana cards correspond to ten-degree divisions of the zodiac called decans. These are traditional esoteric correspondences, not evidence that tarot originated as a coded horoscope.

A correspondence helps a reader explore why a card carries certain symbols and how its theme is described within a particular occult school. It does not establish facts about an individual’s natal chart, predict an event or replace astronomical calculation. For accuracy, state which tarot tradition supplies a mapping: the Rider–Waite–Smith and Thoth systems share much Golden Dawn material, whereas historical Marseille tarot originally used a different context.

The 12 Zodiac Signs and Major Arcana Correspondences

Zodiac signAssociated Major ArcanaInterpretive theme
AriesThe EmperorInitiative, authority, structured action
TaurusThe HierophantContinuity, teaching, social institutions
GeminiThe LoversChoice, polarity, communication
CancerThe ChariotDirection, protection, coordinated movement
LeoStrength / LustCourage, vital force, disciplined expression
VirgoThe HermitInquiry, discrimination, deliberate study
LibraJustice / AdjustmentBalance, fairness, consequences
ScorpioDeathTransformation, completion and reorganization
SagittariusTemperance / ArtSynthesis, refinement, proportion
CapricornThe DevilLimits, commitment, material constraint
AquariusThe StarRenewal, possibility, wider perspective
PiscesThe MoonAmbiguity, receptivity, passage through uncertainty

In this Hermetic mapping, twelve trumps correspond to the signs. Rider–Waite–Smith moves Strength to VIII and Justice to XI, while Thoth uses Lust and Adjustment with related but distinct iconography. These variations matter when a correspondence table is organized by Roman numeral rather than card name.

Seven Classical Planets and the Major Arcana

Classical planetMajor ArcanaCommon theme
MercuryThe Magician / MagusSkill, communication, application of tools
MoonThe High Priestess / PriestessReceptivity, reflection, changing phases
VenusThe EmpressGrowth, attraction, generative and relational themes
JupiterWheel of Fortune / FortuneExpansion, change and cycles
MarsThe TowerBreakdown of unstable structures and force
SunThe SunVisibility, vitality and integration
SaturnThe World / UniverseStructure, culmination and embodied limits

These seven attributions reflect the classical planetary scheme used in the occult correspondence system. Modern outer planets—Uranus, Neptune and Pluto—are sometimes added by contemporary readers, but no single original Golden Dawn association places them in the seven-planet list. If you use an outer-planet scheme, identify it as a later adaptation.

The Three Elemental Major Arcana Attributions

The Fool is traditionally associated with Air, the Hanged Man with Water and the Judgment trump, or Thoth’s Aeon, with Fire and Spirit in Golden Dawn-derived tables. Together with twelve signs and seven planets, these correspondences provide twenty-two trump attributions. The Hanged Man’s imagery can be compared with suspension or surrender, but its Water attribution is part of an esoteric system, not a description of a physical horoscope.

Tarot Suits and the Four Astrological Elements

Tarot suitElementZodiac signs of the same element
Wands / BatonsFireAries, Leo, Sagittarius
CupsWaterCancer, Scorpio, Pisces
SwordsAirGemini, Libra, Aquarius
Pentacles / Coins / DisksEarthTaurus, Virgo, Capricorn

These element relationships are a teaching framework. A Marseille cup may be a historical suit emblem with no explicit Pisces glyph, while a Thoth cup card may include planetary and zodiacal symbols. The association can inform modern divination, but it should not erase what is actually printed on the deck.

Astrological Decans in the Minor Arcana

A zodiac sign covers thirty degrees and can be divided into three consecutive ten-degree decans. Twelve signs therefore give thirty-six decans. In Golden Dawn-derived tarot, the numbered cards Two through Ten from the four suits account for those thirty-six divisions: nine cards per suit. Aces and court cards use different attributions rather than simply continuing this scheme.

Why Twos, Threes and Fours Begin a Suit’s Zodiac Sequence

The Hermetic mapping associates Wands Two, Three and Four with the three decans of Aries; Wands Five through Seven with Leo; and Wands Eight through Ten with Sagittarius. Cups proceed through Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Swords begin with Libra, then Aquarius and Gemini; Disks begin with Capricorn, then Taurus and Virgo. This arrangement follows a particular Golden Dawn-derived ordering, not a universal relationship between every printed tarot number and every sign.

Examples of Planetary Decans on Thoth Minor Cards

The Thoth Two of Wands, Dominion, is attributed to Mars in Aries. The Two of Cups, Love, is Venus in Cancer. The Five of Swords, Defeat, is Venus in Aquarius, and the Nine of Disks, Gain, is Venus in Virgo. These examples illustrate how title, sign, planet and suit are combined. The planetary distribution follows the traditional decan rulership sequence used in the system; it should not be confused with present-day planetary positions.

Astrological Correspondences of Tarot Court Cards

The Thoth courts are defined first by an elemental rank within an elemental suit: Knights express Fire of the suit, Queens Water, Princes Air and Princesses Earth. Some Golden Dawn court cards also occupy ranges of zodiacal degrees, but those ranges do not match the simple one-sign-per-person model. Avoid assigning every court figure to one modern Sun sign without naming and explaining the specific system.

Tarot and Your Birth Chart: What Is Actually Different?

A natal chart is calculated from date, time and place of birth according to an astronomical and astrological framework. A tarot spread is constructed from shuffled or selected cards with assigned positions. Their occult correspondences can be explored side by side, but a tarot draw does not determine an ascendant, the position of Saturn or the timing of a transit. When a reading refers to a zodiac sign, clarify whether it describes the traditional association of a card or a claim about a particular chart.

Differences Across Rider–Waite, Marseille and Thoth

The Rider–Waite–Smith Tarot was shaped by Golden Dawn ideas, though its imagery is not a literal astrological chart. In Thoth Tarot, Crowley and Harris emphasize the occult correspondences explicitly in names, colors and images. Historical Marseille cards predate these elaborate Hermetic systems; using modern planetary attributions with them is a later interpretive overlay.

How to Use Tarot–Astrology Correspondences in a Reading

Read the actual card first, then identify its conventional attribution, then examine the spread position. If the Emperor appears as Advice in a project reading, its Aries link may support a discussion of initiative and authority, but it does not mean the querent is an Aries or that Mars must transit a particular house. Similarly, Two of Cups as a relationship card gains a traditional Venus-in-Cancer layer without establishing anyone’s private feelings.

Common Misunderstandings

  • Assuming tarot was invented to encode the zodiac in Renaissance Italy.
  • Using one sign per court card as a universal historical rule.
  • Treating Thoth decan titles as direct birth-chart measurements.
  • Confusing a card’s traditional planetary attribution with a planet’s current sky position.
  • Applying Crowley’s Hebrew-letter revisions to every earlier Golden Dawn or Marseille table.
  • Presenting later outer-planet correspondences as original parts of the seven-planet scheme.
