Mabon Symbols and Meanings

Return to the main Mabon guide.

Mabon symbols express the autumn equinox through images of balance, harvest, ripening fruit and preparation for the darker half of the year.

Seasonal symbols

Apples, grapes, grain, fallen leaves, baskets and harvest tools are among the most direct seasonal symbols because they connect the festival to the agricultural cycle.

Balance and the equinox

Equal day and night makes balance one of the central modern meanings of Mabon. Scales, paired candles and symmetrical altar arrangements are commonly used to represent this theme.

Historical and modern meanings

Some symbols come from older harvest customs, while others belong to modern Pagan and Wiccan correspondences. They should be distinguished rather than treated as if all shared the same historical origin.

Using Mabon symbols

Symbols can be incorporated into altars, seasonal meals, decorations and rituals. A small number of objects with clear meanings usually creates a stronger practice than a long list of disconnected correspondences.
