How to Read the Thoth Tarot

The Thoth Tarot is a 78-card deck painted by Lady Frieda Harris in collaboration with Aleister Crowley. Its imagery combines classical tarot structure with the Golden Dawn’s Hermetic correspondences, Thelemic ideas, planetary decans, elemental relationships, color scales and Kabbalistic symbolism. Learning to read it requires attention to what Harris actually painted and to Crowley’s written explanations; copying Rider–Waite–Smith keywords without checking the pictures can conceal important differences.

Begin with the structure: twenty-two Major Arcana, called Atu in Crowley’s system, and fifty-six Minor Arcana in Wands, Cups, Swords and Disks. The numbered small cards from Two through Ten carry descriptive titles, and the court figures are Knights, Queens, Princes and Princesses. These names offer clues, but a Thoth interpretation is stronger when the reader also examines the number, suit, symbols and question.

The Four Thoth Suits and Their Elements

Wands are associated with Fire and activity; Cups with Water and emotional or relational themes; Swords with Air, reasoning and conflict; Disks with Earth and material conditions. These elemental associations are part of a defined Hermetic symbolic language. A Sword can represent clear analysis as well as tension, and a Disk need not predict money merely because it is related to material life.

Understanding Thoth Minor Arcana Titles

Unlike Rider–Waite–Smith, which commonly teaches numbered cards through illustrated scenes, the Thoth deck names each Two through Ten. The titles highlight a characteristic expression of the planet, zodiacal decan, suit and Sephirah. Read the title first as a clue, then inspect the picture. The titles are not simply one-word outcomes that apply regardless of the question.

How Decans Work in the Thoth Tarot

A decan is ten degrees of a zodiac sign. Thirty-six cards, the Twos through Tens in four suits, are assigned to thirty-six zodiacal decans with planetary rulerships. For example, Two of Cups connects Venus and Cancer, while Six of Swords connects Mercury and Aquarius. These assignments are traditional occult correspondences, not a measurement of a planet’s current position. Aces and the sixteen courts have other attribution schemes.

Why Aces and Tens Need Special Attention

Aces express the root or potential of their suit and are not assigned a decan in the way that Two through Ten are. Tens correspond to Malkuth in the Hermetic Tree of Life, marking the completion or material limit of a suit’s process. The Ten of Swords, Ruin, and Ten of Disks, Wealth, therefore occupy comparable numerical stages but convey very different expressions.

How to Read the Thoth Court Cards

The Thoth courts are Knight, Queen, Prince and Princess. In their elemental pattern, Knight is Fire of the suit, Queen Water, Prince Air and Princess Earth. This model is central to Crowley’s interpretation and differs from casually transferring a modern Page–Knight–Queen–King description.

Court rankElemental roleExample
KnightFire of the suitKnight of Swords = Fire of Air
QueenWater of the suitQueen of Cups = Water of Water
PrinceAir of the suitPrince of Swords = Air of Air
PrincessEarth of the suitPrincess of Disks = Earth of Earth

When a court card appears, it can describe a style of action, a role or a person already relevant to the question. The elemental model helps qualify the card, but it does not provide evidence of an individual’s gender, character or secret intentions. A Prince may point to analysis or a particular way of expressing an element, not necessarily to a literal young man.

Major Arcana: Atu, Thelema and the Renamed Trumps

Several Thoth Major Arcana use different titles: Adjustment VIII replaces Justice, Lust XI replaces Strength, Art XIV replaces Temperance, The Aeon XX replaces Judgment and The Universe XXI replaces The World. Crowley’s Magus and Priestess also employ abbreviated names. The images deliberately incorporate Thelemic mythology and Hermetic symbolism, so the comparison should consider the distinct visual details rather than only matching Roman numerals.

The Fool, The Star and The Aeon

Thoth’s Fool, Atu 0, integrates complex symbolic figures and is attributed to Aleph and Air. The Star depicts a Thelemic image of Nuit and belongs to Crowley’s revised Heh/Tzaddi correspondence scheme. The Aeon develops a distinct account of Nuit, Hadit and Ra-Hoor-Khuit in place of the familiar resurrection scene of Judgment. These examples show why a system-specific guide is necessary.

The Tree of Life and Elemental Dignities

In Hermetic Qabalah, the numbered small cards correspond by number to the ten Sephiroth from Kether through Malkuth, the Major Arcana to the twenty-two paths, and the suits to the four elemental worlds. In Thoth, these layers can help explain why a card’s title and painted form take their particular shape.

How Elemental Dignities Modify a Reading

Elemental dignities evaluate how nearby cards interact. Some elemental pairs are described as supportive or challenging within a specific Hermetic method; one must state the method, since systems may handle neighboring positions differently. A Wands card next to a Cups card can raise a tension between Fire and Water, whereas Swords and Wands may share more compatible active qualities in some readings. This does not erase the actual positions or card meanings.

Do You Have to Read Thoth Cards Reversed?

No. Many Thoth practitioners read cards upright and use elemental dignity, position and imagery to understand supportive and difficult expressions. Others choose physical reversals. Either can be coherent if selected before dealing; rotating a card does not automatically make it a fixed opposite of its title.

A Simple Three-Card Thoth Reading

Question: ‘How should I approach a demanding research project?’ Use Situation, Difficulty and Advice. Suppose Six of Swords — Science falls in Situation, Eight of Swords — Interference in Difficulty, and Eight of Disks — Prudence in Advice. The first suggests a concern with systematic inquiry; the second warns that multiple ideas or interruptions may disrupt reasoning; the third recommends methodical practical work.

The useful synthesis is to define a research question, reduce competing tasks and apply a consistent review process. This is a teaching example rather than a prediction that the project will succeed. If Thoth’s decan attributions are added, Mercury in Aquarius, Jupiter in Gemini and Sun in Virgo supply further occult layers without replacing the practical context.

How Thoth Differs From Rider–Waite and Marseille in Practice

A Rider–Waite–Smith Five of Swords shows a narrative scene; Thoth Five of Swords is titled Defeat and is represented through a more abstract design. A Marseille pip generally arranges five blades without depicting either scene. The three occupy related card positions but are not interchangeable illustrations.

Five Steps to Begin Studying Thoth Tarot

  • Memorize the deck’s organization and the original names of the suits and courts.
  • Observe each card’s color, emblems, geometry and title without immediately importing Rider–Waite meanings.
  • Study the elements and the general number–Sephirah structure before tackling every decan.
  • Practice one- and three-card spreads, recording the question and positions.
  • Add planetary, Kabbalistic and Thelemic interpretations gradually, checking the original card imagery each time.

Common Thoth Tarot Reading Mistakes

  • Treating every numbered title as a guaranteed outcome.
  • Confusing Thoth Knights and Princes with Rider–Waite court ranks.
  • Reading the card only from the name while ignoring Harris’s painting.
  • Mixing Crowley’s revised correspondence tables with another school’s path numbers without noting the difference.
  • Treating The Aeon as exactly the same picture as Rider–Waite Judgment.
  • Assuming elemental dignities or astrological decans provide proof of future events.
