The New Moon occurs when the Moon lies approximately in the direction of the Sun as seen from Earth. In many modern tarot and witchcraft practices it provides a calendar marker for starting a project, setting an intention or reviewing an emerging possibility. A New Moon tarot spread is a symbolic exercise: its cards do not measure lunar energy or guarantee that an intention will manifest.
Three-Card New Moon Tarot Spread
Arrange three cards left to right under What I Want to Begin, A Resource I Already Have and The First Realistic Step. Decide on the topic before shuffling: a skill, conversation, garden plan or creative project. The middle position is not necessarily a person or object; it can refer to a habit or capacity. The third position should lead to something specific enough to attempt before the next lunar phase.
Five-Card New Moon Intention Layout
A more detailed spread uses Current Position, Intention, Available Support, Unexamined Obstacle and Next Action. Place Intention at the top, Current Position at the center, Support and Obstacle to either side and Next Action below. The layout separates the hope itself from the conditions needed to act. A favorable-looking card under Intention is not evidence that the goal will happen without work.
Six-Card Lunar Cycle Planning Spread
For a full cycle, assign Seed, What Needs Care, Resource, Likely Friction, Mid-Cycle Check and What to Review at the Full Moon. The final position is a review question rather than a fixed forecast. You can record each card now and revisit the layout approximately two weeks later, comparing actual progress with what you wrote. This creates a practical link between new and full moon practices.
Worked Example: Starting a Writing Project
A three-card spread might produce Ace of Wands for Beginning, Three of Pentacles for Resource and Eight of Pentacles for First Step. One reading is that a new idea requires collaboration and regular craft. The next step could be drafting a chapter and identifying one knowledgeable reviewer. No part of this interpretation proves that the manuscript will be accepted, sold or finished by a particular date.
New Moon in the Zodiac Signs
Some contemporary tarot authors design different spreads for New Moons in Aries, Taurus or other signs. These variations combine astrological symbolism with the same lunar phase. State whether the sign is the Moon’s tropical zodiac position and distinguish it from a natal sign. There is no need to add twelve separate mini-readings to a general New Moon spread; a sign-specific guide can focus on its own correspondences.
Setting Intentions and Revisiting Your Journal
Write one goal in positive, measurable language and note the deck, positions and cards drawn. At the Full Moon, check what actually changed, which assumptions were inaccurate and what still requires attention. Candles, incense, crystals and moonlight are optional symbolic additions. Avoid exposing printed cards to damp outdoor conditions or open flames just to perform a ritual.
